Although at first it may not look like the party hotspot to be, "Luxembourg by Night" is quite fun when you know the right places. We'll introduce them to you .
For those who have never set foot on this piece of earth. Luxembourg is a city of 100 000 citizens.
The title of this article could also say: "Two ways, one destination". You will understand …
I guide you in this article through two areas I know best: the “ville-basse” (literally the” low city” - which is called Grund as well) and the “ville-haute” (“high town” - the city center).
Before finishing my introduction, one last note : Smoking is allowed in almost every bar in Luxembourg. I can put up with it well. In terms of beer, there are three common local beers (that’s not all): Battin, Diekirch and Bofferding. The prices for them in the bars will vary between two fifty and three fifty euros (if you follow my advices!). Have a nice trip !
The low city or "Grund"
There, you will find restaurants and bars. Regarding restaurants I don’t know anything, but for bars I am doing a serious investigation.
We will begin with "Scott's Pub". As for the prices, it is not the most competitive. The pub itself is classic, its highlight is its very cozy terrace. Sitting outside at the terrace, you will find yourself in the middle of the low city, right by the river (very romantic). In winter, the terrace is heated by electric heaters.
Now we change the place, but not the road. Only 50 meters away is the "Liquid Pub". On Saturdays it is very difficult to get a seat there. The bar is popular, so it's smoky and loud. That is a sign of quality in my opinion. Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, and the fine rock music, and keep in mind: Yeah, that’s a good bar to start the evening.
New road, new flair! If you cross the only bridge of the area, you will soon face the "café des artistes". I do not know when it opens, but that's not so important. The atmosphere is totally different. You will hear piano play and music of the 80s (Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Edith Piaf, ...). The walls are full of posters of movies, concerts, festivals and old adverts. The average age must be around 35 years, the bar is relaxing, romantic and there is also something unusual in air. Do not be surprised if everyone sings along with the songs played!
Café des Artistes
The high city or the city center
The bench mark for everything in the center is the bus station "Hamilius". From there you can already see the name of your first stop: "Interview". The mix between café and pub is very popular for young people. The cafe is cozy, and also a bit kitsch: various posters decorate walls and the bar is typical made of wood. The music varies between classical pop and rock musics, and its volume increases with the amount of alcohol rises. The prices of beers are reasonable.
When you leave the pub, you go up on the road. You will find "Rocas". You’ll recognize the place immediately with the mass of smokers in front of it. Inside you won’t find any suit/tie. The atmosphere is rock and alternative. Gigs are often organised. The place is opened until three o’clock. And on Saturday, they use to welcome DJ for some electro/techno play.
In the neighboring district are two famous and popular bars. The "Urban" is a beer and cocktail bar in an elegant outlook and visited by cosmopolitan guests. There are two rooms (for Smokers and Non Smokers - that does not happen too often) and there are sporting events (football and rugby) transferred. The other bar just some meters apart is the total opposite: "The Tube" is a British vaulted brick cellar and stuffed with people on weekends. The young, international audience dances to rock and pop music and goes wild.
On the other side of the city, there is the "Independent Café". It’s beautifully designed in the style of a Berlin beer hall. In the “Indie's” the Luxembourgian elite meets, tourists and revelers, it is the melting pot of the city of Luxembourg.
Follow me to the "D: qliq"! Here you enter a cool underground club, on two floors there are DJs playing electro and rock music. The "D: qliq" is small, but nice. It's best to come and check out the rhythm of the Party at one of the regularly organized mass parties. They are often the coup. The "D: qliq" closes at three o’clock.
Finally : always the same destination!
The final round, after three o’clock in Luxembourg you don’t have lots of choice. In one way, it’s easier ! Firstly, I avoid clubs because I don’t like their dress code and it’s expensive. Whatever, for me, there are two possibilities: O'Bar or Soul Kitchen.
"O'Bar" is located in the city center. A small bar with a weird atmosphere opens until six. If you do not want to walk a long way anymore, it's perfect, because it’s right in the city center. Music is planned by barmen via Youtube. There isn’t any style. It’s just a mess of popular songs from “salsa” to rock. If you don’t really care about music and you just want to have fun, could be your place. For days, that’s just a conventional bar but on weeks-end after three, people gets crazy. You can dance on tables, benches, and the counter of the bar. The dark side of Luxemburg, trust me, that’s quite cool.
My other suggestion after three o’clock is "Soul Kitchen" (my favorite place). In the room on the road side, the music is eclectic but mostly rock. In the back room, the bar use to welcome DJs who play electro, techno, dubstep and trance ... Excellent. “Soul Kitchen” is as my sanctuary. Ten minutes by foot from the train station, I finish there before going home. It’s free entry and beers are cheap. The atmosphere is good and you really can go there to dance. As every good place for me, you, of course, could jump on sofas and the table in the first room. I definitely recommend this place !
Have fun in Luxembourg City, maybe we'll meet soon in one of those bars!
I wish you a nice evening. Bonne soirée!
